Elk

The elk, also known as the wapiti, is a majestic creature. It’s North America’s second-largest deer species, with only the moose surpassing its size. These impressive animals roam across open forests, grasslands, and mountains.

Standing Tall: A male elk, or bull, is an imposing sight. With antlers that can grow up to 4 feet long and weigh over 40 pounds, they use these impressive structures during autumn breeding seasons to attract mates and compete with rivals. Their bugling calls, loud and echoing, are a classic sound of the wild.

Herd Mentality: Elk are social creatures that live in herds. Females, calves, and yearlings stay together in a cohesive group, while males tend to be more solitary except during mating season. These herds provide protection from predators and help with finding food.

Adaptable Grazers: Elk are herbivores, munching on grasses, leaves, bark, and even some fruits. Their excellent eyesight and hearing help them stay alert for danger while they graze.

A Resilient Species: Once hunted to near extinction, elk populations have rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. Today, these majestic animals continue to grace the landscapes of North America and parts of Asia.
