Axis Buck
The axis deer, known for its graceful stature, is a moderately sized species. Male axis deer typically reach heights of nearly 90 centimeters (35 inches) at the shoulder, while females stand at around 70 centimeters (28 inches). Their head-to-body length spans approximately 1.7 meters (5.6 feet). While males generally weigh between 30 to 75 kilograms (66 to 165 pounds), females are lighter, ranging from 25 to 45 kilograms (55 to 99 pounds). However, exceptionally large males can tip the scales at an impressive 98 to 110 kilograms (216 to 243 pounds).
The distinctive tail of the axis deer measures 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) in length and is adorned with a dark stripe that runs its entire length. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males being larger than females and possessing antlers. The dorsal (upper) parts of the axis deer boast a golden to rufous hue, adorned with white spots. Their abdomen, rump, throat, insides of legs, ears, and tail are adorned in striking white. A prominent black stripe runs along the spine, adding to its distinctive appearance.
Notably, the axis deer’s antlers are three-pronged and can grow to nearly 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length. These antlers, shed annually like those of most cervids, undergo a transformation from soft velvet to hardened bone. The antlers emerge as soft tissues, progressively mineralize, and eventually harden into bony structures. The mineral composition of the axis deer’s antlers includes copper, cobalt, and zinc.
Additionally, the axis deer possesses hooves measuring between 4.1 and 6.1 centimeters (1.6 and 2.4 inches) in length, with longer hooves on the forelegs. Their dental formula mirrors that of the elk, and they shed their milk canines by one year of age, which are not replaced by permanent teeth.
Compared to the hog deer, the axis deer exhibits a more streamlined build, with longer antlers and brow tines. The chital may resemble the fallow deer, but can be distinguished by its darker coloration and white spots, as well as the presence of a prominent white patch on its throat. The hairs of the axis deer are smooth and flexible, adding to its elegant appearance in the wild.
